Our leaders are poking holes in our Constitution and undermining democratic institutions. How can you help protect our Constitution and our uniquely American democracy?
CONSTITUTION + DEMOCRACY ORGANIZATIONS
The organizations below are working to protect our Constitution and our democracy. They are a mix of nonpartisan/crosspartisan, progressive leaning and right leaning. If the organization states conservative or progressive on its website, this is mentioned in parentheses below.
50501: 50 protests. 50 states. 1 movement. Join us in the fight to uphold the Constitution and end executive overreach.
All on the Line: All On The Line is on a mission to end gerrymandering because it contributes to the polarization and dysfunction in our political system. It’s time to end map manipulation and finally have fair districts.
Choose Democracy: To prepare Americans to prevent and stop undemocratic power grabs. Our work involves psychological preparation, lessons from history and around the globe, and strategic sensibility. (Their website lists multiple ways you can get involved.)
Common Cause: A nonpartisan, grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy. We work to create open, honest, and accountable government that serves the public interest; promote equal rights, opportunity, and representation for all; and empower all people to make their voices heard in the political process.
Defending Democracy Together (Right Leaning): We are Republicans, former Republicans, and conservatives committed to protecting every American’s right to vote.
Democracy Alliance (Progressive Leaning): Founded in 2005, today we serve as the country’s preeminent network of individual political philanthropists, labor unions, and foundations coming together to support catalytic initiatives that win elections, advance progressive policy reforms, and build power across our states.
Democracy Forward: We go to court for people and democracy. The fight for democracy is the fight for people. Democracy Forward uses the law to build collective power and advance a bold, vibrant, democracy for all people. (Non-partisan legal advocacy firm.)
Democracy Fund: We envision an inclusive, multiracial democracy that is open, just, resilient, and trustworthy. To get there, Democracy Fund champions the pro-democracy leaders and organizations who work to shift power toward the people and counter efforts to undermine American democracy.
FairVote: FairVote is a nonpartisan organization seeking better elections for all. We research and advance voting reforms that make democracy more functional and representative for every American. FairVote is the national driving force behind advancing ranked choice voting (RCV) and proportional RCV in legislative districts to give voters more choices, fairer representation, and better government.
Hands Off 2025: This is a nationwide mobilization to stop the most brazen power grab in modern history. They want to strip America for parts—shuttering Social Security offices, firing essential workers, eliminating consumer protections, and gutting Medicaid—all to bankroll their billionaire tax scam. They’re handing over our tax dollars, our public services, and our democracy to the ultra-rich. If we don’t fight now, there won’t be anything left to save. We're taking to the streets nationwide to fight back with a clear message: Hands off!
Indivisible (Progressive Leaning): Our democracy is under threat. But we will not yield to fascism. We will stand together and we'll fight back in defense of our rights, our communities, and our values. Indivisible was founded in response to Trump’s election - but we know that Trump is a symptom of a sick democracy, not its cause. We have to build a democracy that reflects a broad, multiracial “we the people,” one that works for all of us and is sustained by all of us. Only then will we be able to achieve a progressive vision for our future. (The website lists multiple ways you can get involved.)
Issue One: We educate the public and work to pass legislation on Capitol Hill to bolster U.S. elections, build a healthier digital information environment for our democracy, improve the ability of Congress to solve problems, strengthen ethics and accountability, and limit the influence of big money over politics.
League of Women Voters: The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. We empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation, at the local, state, and national levels. (Check to see if there is a local chapter near you.)
The Lincoln Project (Right Leaning): The Lincoln Project is a leading pro-democracy organization in the United States — dedicated to the preservation, protection, and defense of democracy.
New Civil Liberties Alliance: NCLA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit civil rights group founded by prominent legal scholar Philip Hamburger to protect constitutional freedoms from violations by the Administrative State. NCLA’s public-interest litigation and other pro bono advocacy strive to tame the unlawful power of state and federal agencies and to foster a new civil liberties movement that will help restore Americans’ fundamental rights. (Perceived as right-leaning due to conservative supporters and donors)
Republicans for the Rule of Law (Right Leaning): Republicans for the Rule of Law is a group of life-long Republicans dedicated to defending the institutions of our republic and upholding the rule of law. We are fighting to make sure that the laws apply equally to everyone, from the average citizen to the president of the United States. We believe in fidelity to the Constitution, transparency, and the truth.
Republicans for Voting Rights (Right Leaning): Republicans for Voting Rights is an initiative of the Republican Accountability Project with the purpose of defending the accessibility, integrity, and competitiveness of American elections. Republicans for Voting Rights rejects the false choice between voting access and election integrity. We believe that Republicans in federal, state, and local government should protect the right to vote, protect our election systems from partisan or foreign interference, and help build trust in our democracy.
State Democracy Defenders Action: State Democracy Defenders Action brings together a bipartisan all-star team of experts in safeguarding democracy. We fill three key gaps in the fight against election sabotage and autocracy: We go on offense against democracy deniers who break the law, including through our innovative program of outside public support for criminal prosecutions. We work with national, state and local allies across the country to defend the foundation of our democracy–free and fair elections. We help shape the long-term strategy to defeat autocracy in 2025–and beyond.
States United: The States United Democracy Center is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to the rule of law and free, fair, secure elections. We provide direct support to state officials and law enforcement leaders as they uphold the law and our system of checks and balances, protect public safety, and preserve our democracy.
Unitarian Universalists (UU): UU the Vote is a bold initiative created by the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Side With Love team, providing UUs a thoughtfully crafted “plug-and-play” opportunity to bring our democratic values to life in the crucial struggle to build a genuine multiracial democracy. UU the Vote engages people in voter registration, issue education, get-out-the-vote drives, voter protection, state leadership development, and more. Now, in 2024, we have progressed to shift from just election-year organizing to year-round movement-building work toward building a truly inclusive democracy.
Unite America: Country over party. Unite America is a philanthropic venture fund that invests in nonpartisan election reform to foster a more representative and functional government.
